ABOUT THE COLLECTION
This work is about the seasons of life and our ability to transform.
It’s about birth and death and rebirth; an endless loop of time and timelessness.
It’s about holding on to your roots in order to bud and bloom extravagantly in new directions, before falling down to the ground where you first began, to begin again.
It's about the beauty of the process and the opportunity to feel happiness at all stages, even when there is adversity.
ARTIST Q&A
How would you describe the collection in 3 words?
Bloom, bloom, bloom.
What was the catalyst for this work?
Nostalgia for camellias was the original catalyst for this work. I grew up in Melbourne on the east coast of Australia where camellias were plentiful. On the west coast, where I now live, camellias are a rare find so I was very surprised and delighted to discover the lone tree that inspired this collection.
During my childhood, my family ran a plant nursery and imported stoneware from India, with a particular focus on water features. My brother and I were regularly tasked with collecting fallen camellia blooms from our neighbourhood to decorate the water features in the family shop; floating on water they looked like big decadent offerings to the Gods.
What role does intuition play in your work?
My process is almost entirely intuitive. Painting feels like channeling, as though I am not entirely relevant and something much bigger than me is helping to manifest a physical reality.
How do you hope people will react to this collection?
I hope they enjoy it. I hope they feel something good when they look at my work.
